What to Expect at the First Visit
When you come in for your first visit, you can expect to be warmly greeted and treated with respect and cordiality.
If you were not mailed or faxed forms to fill out before the visit, you will be asked to fill out and sign the standard kinds of paper work that has to be donethings like personal information, payment policies, and medical history. For minors (those under legal age to give consent to medical evaluation and treatment), their parents fill out information on family history and their perspectives on things, as well. Because this paper work can be somewhat time-consuming, you will be asked to come in about 15 minutes early to get this done. As always for anything you do not understand, you can ask us for clarification. We recommend that you print out the forms from our web site (click here to view and print) and bring them with you. You can expect the first visit to be about 2 hours long.
After that, the nurse will introduce herself and escort you to an exam room. There she will take a brief history (Dr. Tyson will go into the full history with you himself) and get your "vital signs". Those include height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature. She will also ask about any medications you are taking and other medical information like that.
If you are a minor, your parents can accompany you into the exam room. Remember that at some point they will be asked to step out so that Dr. Tyson can have private time with you. Certainly if you wish, you can still keep them in there with you or you can have the nurse in for any or all of the visit.
After the nurse finishes doing the above, Dr. Tyson will come in. He will spend a great deal of time first getting a thorough history and detail on why you came in, problems you may have been experiencing, and so on.
*After that some blood work for lab or an EKG may be done in the office. The blood work will be sent off to a lab and results are usually available in 12 days. You may be asked to get some other tests, such as a chest X-ray or Bone Density test. Those are done at a different facility. Dr. Tyson will explain why he recommends those tests be done and will be glad to answer any questions about this you may have as well.
Remember: All information is confidential. This is true even for minors (with the rare exceptions of suicidal or homicidal risk or cases of abuse).
